Summer Reading

How do we keep the summer reading slide from happening? Well, here at Winston Elementary we host four summer reading nights. We host two in June and two in July. During this time we entice students to come to our media center by offering fun family activities. For instance, this summer we have a storyteller from the public library, a makerspace challenge, a reading picnic, and our local STEAM Engine. And of course, a snack is always offered. In addition, our wonderful teachers volunteer their time to come help with book selections, activities, and check outs.

In partnership with the Douglas County Public Library our school system works together to have kids reading throughout the summer. Our county uses an activity log with over 100 fun reading activities for students to choose from during the summer. Students are encouraged to return the reading logs for prizes throughout the summer. Many of our students participate with the public library and our school program because they can receive incentives from both places. At the beginning of the school year, students are required to bring the activity log and any projects completed to the media center so they can receive an invitation to our school wide summer reading celebration. Over the years our celebrations have included a water slide, an ice cream truck, a super hero party, and a Lego party. Our goal is to come up with ideas that are fun, but won’t break the bank.
